のく【退く】

1 〔そこを空けるために去る〕 get out of the [sb's] way; make room 《for…》; move [step] aside; (後へ) step back.

●脇[後ろ]へ退く move [step] aside [back] (out of the way).

●退けっ! じゃまするな. Stand aside! Don't interfere. | Get out of the way! Stay out of this.

・そこを退いてください. Please get out of the way [let me through, let me past].

・退いた, 退いた. Get out of the way! | 〔警察官などが群衆に〕 Move on!

・群衆が退いたあとにゴミがたくさん落ちていた. When the crowd had moved on there were piles of rubbish on the ground.

2 〔職や地位などをしりぞく〕 leave; retire 《from》; withdraw 《from》.
